Growing up on the East Coast, Kathy was fortunate to be able to pursue an early interest in antiquing, accompanying her mother on antiquing trips to South Hampton and throughout upstate New York. She began redecorating her room every six months at the age of 8, moved with her family to Los Angeles when she was 14, and earned a B.A. from UCLA.
A post-graduate trip to Europe reinvigorated Kathy’s love for design and art history, which lead her to return to UCLA to study interior design. During this process, she married, and she and her husband began to buy and remodel homes. It wasn’t long before friends and acquaintances began to ask her to help them do the same. Kathy enjoyed assisting people with their remodelling projects while pursuing a job within the interior design industry.
She was hired at Ferret, a well-regarded home furnishings boutique in Studio City, when it was just opening its doors. While there, Kathy was instrumental in developing the overall concept for the store, as well as creating and designing Ferret's signature home furnishings line. When Ferret’s clientele began requesting interior design services, Kathy stepped up to the plate, working as associate designer on homes for celebrities including Jane Leeves and Peri Gilpin, both of which were featured in InStyle magazine. Her last project with Ferret, before leaving to form her own company, Pique Design with Patti Mazzarini, was a private home in Carmel, which was featured in Architectural Digest in 2004.
Kathy lead the design team at Pique creating a unique blend of interiors from traditional to bold comtemporary projects. In 2008, she decided to pursue a novel concept in interior design, forming Style In 5, focusing on quick and individualized interiors for the budget minded consumer. At the same time, Kathy reinvigorated her own design firm, Hartz House Design and has been providing her clients with top quality inspired interiors ever since.
